The Post-Pandemic Era: What Can Be Expected from the Wine Tourism?. I. RURAL TOURISM AS A DEVELOPMENT PHENOMENON Rural tourism is a tool and, as such, a source of local development for communities. Thus, as the demand for alternative and natural destinations grows, rural areas propose a form of travel that means much more than relaxation or fun, making them an object of special interest for tourists and visitors. Within this context, local social actors intervene to promote productive and value chains of proximity, discovering new destinations and spaces of commercialisation for the products and services they offer, such as handcraft production, development of local cuisine, wine tourism activities, food paths2, ecotourism3 and active tourism (i.e. hiking, trekking or horseback riding), in which local populations are the main actors in development. It increases awareness to the conservation of biodiversity, natural environment and cultural assets, both among locals and visitors, requiring special management processes to minimise the negative impact on the ecosystem.
