The Legal Impacts of COVID-19 in the Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Industry

THE TOURISM AND HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY IN CROATIA 131 Even comparing with January and February 2020, in March, we registered a significant drop in the number of arrivals and overnight stays of both domestic and foreign tourists (Fig. 5). In general, the bookings stopped, and the ones for the following period were cancelled. There are still ongoing cancellations of arrivals for the peak season, and all bookings have been postponed until 2021. The existing problems in the tourist sector are extremely serious because as many as 99.3 % of the registered enterprises in the tourist sector are small and medium enterprises (mostly family enterprises, private households or farms). Moreover, comparing to previous years, the arrivals and overnight stays of tourists have dropped sharply in relation to any country from which tourists used to arrive (Fig. 6), for instance, tourist arrivals from China, in the first two months of 2020, significantly decreased.
