Tourism Law in Europe

208 TOURISM LAW IN EUROPE Lack of recognition by professionals: Although the “Palace” distinction is intended to highlight French excellence on the international scene, not all hoteliers are unanimous about it. For example, the Lucien Barrière group, which includes four luxury establishments such as the Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière in Paris, the Royal in Deauville, the Majestic in Cannes and the Hermitage in La Baule, has refused to compete for this distinction. This disagreement is said to be due to the loss of business customers who prefer 4-star establishments: the expenses linked to the conditions required to be classified as a 5-star establishment seem too ostentatious and costly. The quality of information on the level of the hotel industry in France has been improved by having the information for the classification of tourist accommodation sent up to national level. This facilitates a more detailed analysis of the supply of accommodation, which is expected to improve the whole accommodation chain: from production to marketing.
