Competition Law in Tourism

COMPARATIVE LAW EXPERIENCES: REFUSAL FROM SERVICE PROVIDERS 229 7. FINAL REMARKS The tourism lodging sector’s main actors are Airbnb, Homeaway (Expedia), Flipkey (Tripadvisor), OneFineStay (Accor Hotels), Wimdu (Wyndham) and Beenest (Blockchain technology). Frequently, the service providers inside these platforms refuse to register as such, as to avoid paying taxes and to abide by labour laws. Moreover, there is a total lack of local control and inadequate consumer protection. Local authorities and lodging associations have long been fighting against these actors and losing their battle. However, there is no turning back; tourists are increasingly turning to this type of accommodation. Therefore, it is necessary to apply better control, instead of prohibitive laws, and increase joint work between the public and private sectors.
